Introduction

This standard covers the setting up and use of access equipment, so that the installer can work at heights safety. It is important that the installer uses the appropriate access equipment in the correct way. The installer has to ensure the access equipment is safe, assembled and positioned correctly and that it is safe to use. This course tests individual understanding of how to work safely on ladders and poles. The target audience is aimed at those working on the telecoms network including suppliers and contractors.

Performance Objectives

  • Comply with health and safety requirements, relevant statutory regulations and industry standards/codes of practice at all time
  • Assess the risks of working at height and identify a safe working system
  • Use the appropriate access equipment for the installation as specified in the risk assessment and according to organisational procedures
  • Inspect access equipment prior to use to ensure that it is safe to use
  • Prepare access equipment at the correct location according to the schedule agreed with the customer and all relevant people
  • Confirm the most suitable position for the access equipment and ensure it is sited on suitably prepared load bearing areas
  • Check and prepare the access equipment correctly according to manufacturer’s instructions and any relevant regulations
  • Inspect the access equipment to ensure it is stable and safe before and during use
  • Set up access equipment following manufacturers instructions and standard operating procedures
  • Ensure that communications are maintained with a colleague during working at height
  • Wear suitable and properly maintained personal protective equipment at all times
  • Identify any problems relating to the work and deal with them according to standard operating procedures before commencing any work
  • Dismantle access equipment correctly and ensure that it is stored in the appropriate location ready for further use
